Schiavo Autopsy Leaves Most Important Questions Unanswered

(Forest Park, IL) Today's release of findings in the autopsy of
Terri Schiavo leave the central issues in her life and death
unanswered,says a national disability rights group.

For example, contrary to articles stating the autopsy report
"supported" the diagnosis of "persistent vegetative state
(PVS)," a neuropathology expert today was careful to say that
PVS is a clinical diagnosis rather than a pathological one. 
He added that nothing in the autopsy was "inconsistent" with
a PVS diagnosis.

The real elephant in the living room, of course, is whether or
not we can really know how conscious anyone labeled "PVS"
really is.  Several studies have revealed high misdiagnosis
rates, with conscious people being mistakenly regarded as
totally and irrevocably unaware.

The autopsy also documented significant brain atrophy, and
the medical panel called the damage "irreversible." 

This is not the same as saying she had no cognitive ability. 

"It's always seemed to us that PVS isn't really a diagnosis;
it's a value judgment masquerading as a diagnosis," said
Stephen Drake, research analyst for Not Dead Yet, a national
disability rights group that filed three amicus briefs in the
case.  "When it comes to the hard science, no qualified
pathologist went on the record saying she couldn't think
or couldn't experience her own death through dehydration."

Diane Coleman, president and founder of Not Dead Yet,
agreed.  "The core issues remain the same.  Protection of
the life and dignity of people under guardianship, and a high
standard of proof in removing food and water from a person
who can not express their own wishes.  These are issues of
great concern to the disability community - evidenced by the
26 national disability groups that spoke out in favor of
saving Terri Schiavo's life over the past few years."

Not Dead Yet is a national disability rights group based in
Forest Park, IL. It organizes and leads other disability
organizations in opposing legalization of assisted suicide,
euthanasia and other forms of medical killing.

Dear Cheryl:

At 1:30 yesterday as the news conference was ending I was finishing a full read of the 39 pages of the report.

A call from TEJournal to interview me, was interrupted by another call saying that the computer drive of the paper was just hacked and wiped.

Fifteen minutes after that my other lines are ringing off the hook for requests to do radio shows all afternoon and evening to give detailed opinion on the ME report, conference and comparison to facts the public have been shown over the years...

My analysis of the ME report is probably point by point very similar to yours.  The ME is a bad boy for reading the statements he did, because they grossly spun and skewed the facts that glare out at you and me, as well as those who really understand the global facts (19 years) of events surrounding Michael and Terri's lives together.

The ME report shows that she has a brain.  A lot of brain!

It does not however accurately report the weight of her brain.  If every person they autopsy had a dehydrated brain then the new average weight of a brain would be much less than the "double" they claim when compared to Terri's post mordum.

The report says that much of her brain was preserved.

I think that a Brain Structure Forensic specialist who is also a sculptor could recreate the actual size from this report.  However, it is noted that this ME report and the sub reports DO NOT USE MICROMETERS and give measurements of anything. Very sloppy.

We know she had a Thalamus because he 'followed the wire to its insertion point' thus verifying she had one.  No details about the electrodes, their condition and effect on surrounding tissue.  That would be evidence to support or dispell neglect.  And also good info for science and manufacturing.  Lame.

The cortex was not "gone" or "water" as the liars of many told the puplic for so many years but then we could have found this out with testing while she was alive.

As you can imagine, I too have picked this thing apart.  I find that it does not give the cause of collapse but helps to get us closer by eliminating most all of Michael & Companies claims that were used to get the Judicial Execution by Dehydration.

The Brain doctor says that neuropathologic field is not qualified to make a diagnosis of PVS as that is a diagnosis/prognosis that another field makes of a living person.
But the news picked up on him saying that prior to them, the physician field had made claim that she was clinically PVS, so they adopted and carried past the ME and spin that this is proof she was PVS (clinical) and nothing could have been done to help her.

Clinical PVS is NOT LEGAL PVS as we both know and have been saying and now blue by doing so.  This is a very strong point against Judge Greer, in that he had to find LEGAL PVS and this confirms that she was not, by saying that she was CLINICAL PVS.

And so much more....

I miss the times that we used to talk for hours on the phone about the points of this kind of stuff and pondered/debated to brainstorm these points.

Buy two sponges of exact size and weight.  Put each of them in a dish and weigh the dish and 'dry' sponge.  Now fully saturate one of the sponges, then weigh.

No interpolative or projective procedures are indicated in this report to determine the weight of her brain compared to non-dehydrated persons autopsied brains.

Poor Terri's body was taking hydration from wherever it could find any and sending to whichever cell from head to toe that needed a drink.  So of course her brain shrank in weight during the last few weeks of her life.

The real questions have not been asked or answered in front of or for the primary issue and matter at hand.

Why and what caused her alleged blindness.  Was it the fault of another person?

What negative effect did the electrode(s) have on the physio-integrity of Terri?

What caused the Femur damage found in August 90 xray and again noted in the March 91 bone scan?

Why was it not treated?  Who was responsible to do that and did not?

Why does the ME report basically state that all her troubles, bone wise, as being osteoporosis without any test data on bone density or bone tissue testing.

What about Michael saying in the SP Times late in 1990 that for some reason he pulled on the sheets and she fell out of bed.

When was that?   Was that Feb25, 1990 or was sometime during and while she was in a hospital or facility between 2.25.90 and the interview in fall 1990?

I have a hundred+ more.

Dear Mackey.....

The ME said that the epinephrin used to 'revive' Terri is known to cause as much as a 2.0 drop in potassium.  That is as much as a 56% drop from a 3.6 normal.  He said that the potassium levels were measured from a sample taken AFTER she had already been at the hospital for some minutes and AFTER she had received the epinephrin doses and approximately 1.25 liters of fluids before arrival, which also changed her body chemistry.

Michael, Felos & Company have maintained for years that her collapse was result of A) potassium imbalance (Too LOW) that was caused by B) eating disorder.

Therefore, if her potassium was already low BEFORE receiving the epinephrin, and we now know what severe drop that epinephrin produces, then the lab results would have shown only trace or no potassium residual level and she would not have lived in the ER.  As it is they instituted actions (treatments) to bring up the potassium levels from the 2.0 level the lab found to a more normal 3.6 as he states normal to be.

What amount of potassium, if any, was in the fluids given 'on scene' before arrival at hospital ER and what would be the expected increase in residual level that could be attributed to the IV fluids?  That's if it contributes at all.  This would help determine or at least approximate her potassium level as she lay on the hall/bath floor.

Did the paramedics get a potassium reading on scene?

The ME does not ask or answer.

Schiavo's Parents Not Swayed by Autopsy

RN Ford Comments:  Rightfully so, I would not be swayed by the autopsy if I were them as well.  The autopsy gave a clear revelation to the fact that Michael Schiavo's claims that Terri's trauma was a result of bulimia, low potassium and/or heart attack were all bogus!  Now the evidence is clear and right from the medical examiner that the manner of her death was certified as undetermined.
As the loving parents who the Schindlers are; the family who fought long and hard to keep their daughter alive and tried to place her back in the safety of their home, there is not a doubt in my mind they will not rest until they find out what  caused their daughter's collapse in February of 1990.

Remember, the most critical  piece of information in that autopsy report is the information that said she did NOT collapse from low potassium and that her heart and body were healthy at the time of her collapse.

The results then leave clear and convincing evidence that Terri's trauma did not  occur from a sudden bolt of lightening out of the clear blue sky, what Terri's parents have been questioning all along!   Do we leave her collapse and the 15 years of misery she was forced to endure, ending in Schiavo's success at torturing Terri  to her death via dehydration a mystery?  I think not!
Ignorance remains when Felos claims Schiavo is "pleased" at the results.

Any news agencies that leads this story about the autopsy showing no evidence of abuse is a lie. For example, the autopsy clearly showed the abuse of her dental health and hygiene. Secondly, neither of the medical examiners were qualified to do the specialized type of autopsy that can and should have been done in order to determine any history of strangulation. This type of autopsy can and should have been done by the appropriate experts in that field who offered their services even prior to Terri's death, but were declined.
