Subject: serious allegations here: John McCain and the USS Forrestal Fire (see photos)

Did He Start The USS Forrestal Fire?

Surviving crewmen and those who investigated the Forrestal fire case reported that McCain deliberately 'wet-started' his A-4E Skyhawk to shake up the guy in the F-4 Phantom behind his A-4.

Incompetence Or A Stunt

'Wet-starts', done either deliberately (the starter motor switch allowed kerosene to pool in the engine and give a wet start) or accidentally, shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft. 'Wet starting' was a common practice among young 'hot-dog' pilots.

Zuni Rockets Were Volatile Design

In McCain's case, the 'wet-start' 'cooked off' and launched the M34 Zuni rocket from the rear F-4 that punctured the Skyhawk's fueltank, knocked the M-65 1000 lb bomb off it's 500 lb rated mount, and touched off the explosions and massive fire.

McCain Was Shufled Out In A Hurry

The F-4 pilot was reportedly killed in the conflagration, along with 167 of his fellow Forrestal shipmates. McCain was quickly (they were still counting the Forrestal dead) transferred to the USS Oriskany (the only Forrestal crewman to be immediately transferred).

I viewed the actual film that was shot by a Forrestal crewmember from the crow's nest. This video covered the fire from the beginning to it's sad ending. Indicated that the fire was started by a yellow plane hauling tractor. This film is the standard safety film shown to all carrier sailors during the 1970's and later. Maybe another reader remembers the NAVSAFETY film title.

I was aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal that day. I was about 150' away from John McCain's aircraft. I saw the start of the fire. You are so far off the mark about what happened it's pathetic. You don't even have the aircraft alignment right. The F-4 wasn't behind McCain's A-4 it was across the flight deck. There is no wet start on an A-4. The A-4 uses JP-4 not kerosene and the number of dead was 132. Get the facts straight before someone sues your dumb ass for slander.
