My experience with Phone from Home Last Night

PF sends:

I spent some time last night calling on the phone from home program. I thought I would be calling Maine, but they switched it over to North Dakota. At first I was disappointed, but after a while, I realized this was a blessing.

The first thing I noticed is people answer the phone (60%). The second is that people are willing to answer the survey. The third is everyone was undecided. The fourth is they were willing to listen (and I went off script and asked people what mattered to them). The fifth is that unlike the people in Iowa and New Hampshire that would say "Why are you bothering me!" They would say "It is great that you care." The people of North Dakota aren't used to getting attention and appreciate someone calling them.

A little background on the state for those of you that don't know. They are a small, cold state that has very low unemployment (like 4%) because they are having an oil boom. This is very good of course, but it has driven housing prices up and the people that aren't making the big drilling pay are feeling squeezed. They also had a big flood last year (bigger than Katrina), but they got no love from the nation like the people of Louisiana did. Now I don't talk about these issues, but you should be aware of them, because they will. North Dakota has a Caucus on Super Tuesday (March 6th) that awards 28 unbound delegates (that means we could win 30% of the vote, but get 80% of the delegates if we are organized). Dr. Paul has polled in first place in South Dakota, but I don't know of any polling in North Dakota. In 2008, only 9000 votes were cast and Mitt won with 36%, McCain 2nd with 23%, Paul third with 21% and Huckabee 4th with 20%. A 4 way split like today. It was one of Paul's best states and as you saw in Colorado and Minnesota, Mitt is much weaker in the Midwest than 4 years ago and Paul is somewhat stronger. Santorum will hopefully be knocked down by then, but maybe they will be pumping Newt again (who knows). The point is we could win it with 4,000 votes and we probably have 3,000 votes now.

So if you have used phone from home before and been discouraged or if you just haven't gotten the chance to try it yet, because you have been so busy doing stuff in Florida, or your family or your job, now is the time for you to make a difference. It is easy and it is fun. Unless you want to travel to North Dakota in the middle of winter, it will make more difference than anything else you can do from Florida.

Imagine 2 scenerio's for a moment.

#1 As you watch the super Tuesday results come in, you notice early that Dr. Paul narrowly loses the first few states and you think this will be another night of disappointment. A little later, CNN calls North Dakota for Rick Santorum talks about he is surging again. Almost at midnight they call Idaho for Romney and although they don't mention it, Ron Paul is only 2% behind. Dr. Paul wins Alaska, but they don't even bother to cover it. As you go to bed at 3am, you wonder why people can't see the wisdom in the good doctor's words. You wonder if people will wake up before it is too late.

#2 As you watch the super Tuesday results come in, you notice early that Dr. Paul narrowly loses the first few states and you think this will be another night of disappointment. A little later, CNN calls North Dakota for Ron Paul and quickly talks about how Newt and Santorum are not out of it yet. Almost at midnight they call Idaho for Ron Paul with 97% of the precincts reporting and they don't even bother to cover his win in Alaska. As you go to bed at 3am, you can't hold back the emotion that has been bottled up in you for so long. You've worked so hard and finally, we are seeing some results. You can't believe it is finally happening!

We've had 11 days to rest after our Florida Primary where we helped Dr. Paul get over 100,000 votes. Now let's get a lot more delegates for a lot less votes in the Caucus states. We can win this thing. All it takes is a little work from our grassroots supporters (that means YOU). Let's come together now and make a difference.
